MARIAN EMMA JEAN FLOURNOY
July 2, 1947 - December 3, 2016
Marian Emma Jean Flournoy was born July 02, 1947, in Omaha, Nebraska to the late JC Lewis and Hazel E. Lewis. Throughout her elementary, middle and high school years she attended schools in the Omaha School District. She and her family eventually moved to Kansas City, Mo. It was in Kansas City where she began to build her life.
Marian was the first African American security guard of the Wayne Minor Housing Projects. She drove for the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (Metro) for several years before she switched into the childcare profession. In the early 80’s she started her own in-home childcare, which she operated for many years. She received her AA. in Early Childhood Education from Penn Valley Community College. She went on to continue her education from Park University, receiving her BA in Child and Family Studies.
Marian was affiliated with several organizations and received many different accolades. She was the president of the City Wide Family Child Care Association. She was a part of the Accredited Family Child Care Home, Observer for National Association of Family Child Care Providers, Family Child Care Home Lab for Francis Institute, Mentor for the Family Conservancy Accreditation Program; she was also a part of Kansas City Welfare Rights Organization and many more. Marian was awarded the John B & Mary Francis Award (Leadership in Early Learning), Master Provider Award Francis Institute, K.C.M.C Child Development Corporation Certificate of Excellence Award, Francis Lifetime Achievement Award, and K.C.M.C Provider of the Year Award. She was the only Family Child Care Provider in the KC area to receive four stars in the quality rating system.
Marian was a sweet warm hearted woman, with an infectious smile. However, if you did something wrong or upset her, she would cuss you up one end and down the other. She was also known for giving out chokings (she was a pro at it lol). She enjoyed spending time laughing and talking with family and friends, especially during Thanksgiving and Christmas. She loved shopping more so from QVC. She impacted many people throughout her life and will continue to live on as she watches over us. She was an intelligent, strong, independent woman who fought an astonishing fight immensely until the end.
Marian departed this life on December 03, 2016 at Research Medical Center. She leaves to cherish in her memories five children James Robinson (Carmela Robinson), Adrian Robinson (Carol Robinson), Kelly Robinson, Justina Page (James Page) and Stacy Robinson, two brothers Joseph Lewis (Angie Lewis), Jerry Lewis (Trudy Lewis), two sisters Terrie Lewis and Sirlena Johnson (late Ronald Johnson), fifteen grandchildren and ten and two half great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, a host of other family and friends. She is preceded in death by her father JC Lewis, mother Hazel E. Lewis, her grandmother Ella Mae Griffin, her uncles Melvin Robinson, Billy Robinson and her grandson Amos Page. Marian will forever be loved and deeply missed.
