CHESTER, DARCEL JOAN (née POPE), 71, passed away January 5 at her home in Kansas City, MO, with her children by her side. Born in Washington, she lived primarily in Kansas, as well as Missouri, Florida, and Nebraska. Darcel worked in the food and entertainment industry before transitioning to clerical office work, retiring after many dedicated years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Terry Dean Chester, her parents Evelyn and Robert Pope, and her brother David Pope. Surviving are her children Steven Meacham and Mia Sutherland, brothers Doug and Dan Pope, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. A spring memorial at Unity Village in Lee’s Summit, MO, will be announced. Darcel Joan Chester (née Pope) passed away peacefully at her home in Kansas City, Missouri, on Sunday, January 5, at 4:10 a.m., at the age of 71. Her son, Steven Daniel Meacham, and her daughter, Mia Michele Sutherland, were by her side. Darcel had been on hospice care, provided by Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care, for five months. She welcomed the promise of eternal life with her Savior, Jesus, and looked forward with joy to the end of her earthly suffering.


Born in Washington, Darcel spent much of her life in Kansas and at times also called Missouri, Florida, and Nebraska home. She was the youngest of four children. Her professional path included the food and entertainment industry before she transitioned into clerical office work, from which she retired. Darcel was an avid camper and found great pleasure traveling in her RV alongside her beloved husband, Terry Dean Chester.


Darcel was preceded in death by her husband, Terry (2009); her parents, Evelyn and Robert Pope; and her brother, David Pope. She is survived by her brothers, Doug Pope and Dan Pope; her daughter, Mia Sutherland and her husband Don; her son, Steven Meacham and his wife Helen; her grandchildren, Michael, Catherine, Tiffany, Charles, Montgomery, and Christina; and her great-grandchildren, Izzy, Leland, Tabitha, and Addison.


A memorial service is planned for spring at Unity Village in Lee's Summit, Missouri—timed so that the rose garden will be in bloom. Those who wish to be notified of details when they are available should reach out directly to Mia or Steven.


In lieu of flowers, friends and family are invited to direct donations or tokens of appreciation in Darcel’s name to KansasCity Hospice & Palliative Care. Darcel’s family is deeply grateful for the compassionate care she received and for the loving support from all who shared her journey.
