Doris Jean Clayton was born on July 4, 1936 in Webbers Falls, Oklahoma to Willie and Adeline Green. She was the oldest of 7 children. She married Lawrence Clayton in 1954 and the two of them built a life together in Kansa City, Kansas, later moving to the Missouri side. Lawrence and Doris were blessed with 5 children - Larry, Rhonda, Lawana, Lance, and Ramona.
Doris was very driven and determined. If she wanted to do something, she did it. At the age of 55, Doris graduated from college with a degree in Culinary Arts. While matriculating at Penn Valley Community College, Doris was chosen to supervise a crew in the planning, preparation and service for a breakfast meeting with a very special guest - President Ronald Regan. Her first job as a chef was for Annie’s Sante Fe Mexican Restaurant. Doris was a serial entrepreneur. Throughout her life she operated her own cleaning business, sold real estate, was a professional seamstress, owned a catering business, and owned and operated a daycare prior to retiring. Doris was a co-founder of the Inner-City Sewing Co-op; an organization that taught young ladies how to make their own clothing.
Doris enjoyed music, cooking, reading, watching westerns, and spending time with her family. Her favorite song was the hymn “It Is Well With My Soul”. She also loved fashion, especially shoes. Doris touched the lives of many people. She loved Jesus and her family.
Doris departed this life on February 22, 2025. Her husband, parents, 4 brothers, 1 sister, and 1 daughter preceded her in death. Doris leaves to cherish her memory, children Larry Clayton (Tara), Lance Clayton (Bridgette), Rhonda Mitchell, Ramona Clayton; sister Devola Shepard (Carl); 23 grandchildren; over 50 great-grandchildren; great-great grandchildren; many nieces; nephews; cousins; and friends.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday March 6, 2025 , visitation will be held from 2 P.M. - 3 P.M. with services beginning at 3 P.M. at Golden Gate Funeral & Creamtion Services, LLC. 2800 East 18th st., Kansas City, Missouri 64127.
