Gary M. Johnson was born March 23, 1954 in Kansas City, KS to Joseph Albert Stanley and Jacquelyn Leona Johnson.
Gary met Jewell Banks in 1983 and the two later married in July 1986. To their union, one child, Jacqueline Johnson, was born.
Gary worked in hospitality at the Westin Crown Center from 1973 to 2014, totaling 41 years of service as a doorman. Gary had the pleasure of being the first smiling face patrons met as they entered ... Like a true Kansas Citian, Gary loved to Bar-B-Que and always kept the crowd dancing with his DJing skills. His passion for music, and impeccable knowledge for all the “old school” jams was beyond impressive. There wasn't an artist he couldn't name! A Sunday at Gary and Judy's house was the epitome of family vibes, with Judy in the kitchen cooking up all the staples and Gary next to his sound system with his CD book putting the Dramatics, Earth, Wind, and Fire, The SOS Band, and all the other greats in rotation. Gary was also a die hard Chiefs fan! He loved his city and the Chiefs! Near the end, Gary began losing his vision at a rapid pace, but was able to see his beloved Kansas City Chiefs win the Superbowl Championship for the third time!
Gary was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Jacquelyn Johnson; father, Joseph Stanley; stepmother, Exie Stanley; sister, Rosalind Matthews; Aunts, Kathryn Maxey and Cozetta Woodard; Uncles, Harvey Maxey and Lester Woodard.
Gary leaves behind to cherish his wife of 37 years, Jewell Johnson; daughter, Jacqueline Johnson; Step-son, Damon Banks (Jennifer); Step-daughter, Kenya Banks; Honorary son; Montonio Workcuff. Sister, Julia Lee; Step-brother, Clifton Matthews; Sister-in-laws, Francina (Sam) McNeil, Angela (Anthony) Jenkins; brother-in-laws, Larry (Vernita) Banks, David Banks, Robert Banks, Mark (Stacy) Banks; Grandchildren, Nairobi Banks, Naomi Banks, Jamonte Banks, Cynita Banks, Kimee’ Banks, Simone Banks, Madison Banks, Jayde Rice, Naomi Banks (part II), Aiden Banks, and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
