Hazel was born into this world on May 1, 1944. She was adopted at an early age by Ben Lee and Lola Lawson.
Hazel was educated in El Paso, Texas where she attended the University at Texas El Paso (UTEP). While attending UTEP, she received her LPN License. Hazel had always been passionate about helping people and caring for the less fortunate.
Hazel relocated to Kansas City, where she worked as a private duty caregiver and at various hospitals and nursing homes, including St. Luke’s on the Plaza; where a few of her grand-children were born. Her most memorable position was at Swope Ridge Nursing Home.
Hazel grew up around the military base in El Paso, Texas. She developed a style of her own which was always straight to the point. She taught her children to be humble and to treat every person with dignity no matter what our personal or visual opinions may be. She taught this by living her life never thinking she was too good or above anyone. She always saw the good in everyone she interacted with. Hazel had an infectious smile and a warm sense of humor. Those who spent quality time with Hazel, knew the value of wearing a seatbelt because her jovial spirit would catch you off guard and take you for an unexpected ride.
Hazel enjoyed gardening, collecting antiques, and traveling while drinking her coffee.
Hazel loved the Lord. She loved reading her Bible and talking about how God’s blessings continued to show up in her life.
In her latter days she loved helping with the U-ROC Outreach Ministry. She looked forward to riding along with her daughter Leah and distributing food, toiletries and clothing. Hazel was an encourager and could literally spark up a conversation with any-body and within five minutes you would know that she was a woman of God.
Hazel’s first marriage was to Charles Banks Sr., who preceded her in death. She later united in marriage to Robert H. Mitchell Jr., of Aurora, Colorado.
Hazel was called home on Friday, December 30, 2022. Her grandson, Robert H. Mitchell III preceded her in death.
Hazel leaves to cherish her memory and to carry on her legacy; her children, Charles Banks Jr., Noah Banks, Leah Banks, Donnice Mitchell, and Krystal Mitchell-Garcia (Samual); 18 grandchildren, Irving Beeks, Toenee Banks, Darrell White Jr., Darrenn White (Brittany), Zannyell White, Terrell Banks, Micheal Banks, Cherrell Banks, Phillip McGee III, Patrice’a Ersery, Joshua Garcia, Anthony Mitchell, Leah Mitchell, Kryssha Porter, Kourtnee Porter, Tremaine Banks, and Aiden Banks; 24 great grand-children, Derrell Banks, Cameron Gorman, Ja’Liyah Johnson, Elijah Byrd, Ma’Riyah Gunn, Izayah Gunn, DaMaunie Ersery- Alvarez, Ty’Ran Banks, Trinity Banks, D’Miyah White, Darrell White III, Lindyn Powers, Lyzah White, Kendrick Porter, Karmen Riley, Klowie Mitchell, Keora Mitchell, Lilly Mitchell, Adonis Mitchell, Armani Mitchell, Aiden Mitchell, Jayvion McGee, and Zaryia Jackson; 1 great-great granddaughter, Ta’Lonni Womack, and a host of other relatives, and friends.
