James Gordon Coble

James Gordon Coble was born September 25, 1939, to Herbert and Ioma Coble and shared the family home with siblings, Leon and Carolyn. Although the family called Missouri home they did move to Montana for a brief period before returning to Missouri to settle in.

It was here in Missouri that the young man who preferred to be called by his middle name Gordon, graduated Excelsior Springs High School in 1957 where he enjoyed youthful activities including Future Farmers of America.

As a young man he met and fell in love with Roberta Dagley. Their union produced one ruggedly handsome son, Dale, but heartache came in the loss of Roberta to cancer.

Gordon loved farming and livestock, but his greatest joy was his family and watching his son Dale compete in the rodeo arena.

After Gordon and Dale’s tragic loss, a mutual friend introduced Gordon to her sister, Loretta Kay King. They grew in love rather quickly. Soon the shy, unassuming Gordon asked the more outgoing and flamboyant Loretta to wed.

Loretta brought to Gordon’s quiet lifestyle 3 beautiful daughters whom he accepted as his own. The daughters gave him 6 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and one who is still on the way.

Gordon soon became the ring master of a large, boisterous family filled with action, drama, laughter, joy, setbacks and victories. He faced it all with a calm demeanor and steady hand of control and dignity.

His spiritual strength drawn from the word of God made his advice sound and his wisdom to be of a healing nature. He soon became the true patriarch of the family.

His wisdom will live on for years to come in the lives of those whom he shared it with.

Gordon battled heart issues from his midlife to his passing, an ailment that was discovered to be a family trait.

Although the farming he loved so dear became a distant memory, he lived it often through the eyes of his son Dale.

Gordon’s set back never caused him to lose hope of loving God, and loving people. His quiet presence always brought such peace to family and friends alike.

This past Sunday morning October 13, 2024. Gordon as usual was not late for worship service, this time he worshipped face to face with the Lord and Savior he had dedicated his entire life to. Now in the presence of Jesus his pain, grief and toil has ended as he surveys the layout of a kingdom filled with abundant life, love and happiness.

Gordon has been preceded by his father Herbert, mother Ioma, brother Leon, sister Carolyn and former wife Roberta as well as son in-law Jack Wicker.

He is survived by his wife Loretta Coble, son Dale (Carmen) Coble, daughters April Wicker, Cecile (Rob) Stark, Colleen (Lonnie) Hardy, grandchildren, Nathan Wicker, Derek Baxter, Rachael Wicker, Emmanuel (Hannah) Gonzalez, Chad (Lauren) Baxter, Auston (Kelle) Hardy and great grandchildren, Keanna, Annalise, Nolan, Preston, Jackson, Charlie, Noah, Josilynn, Gideon, Zymri.. and little one yet to be determined. As well as nephews, nieces, cousins and countless friends.

It is an understatement to say this gentle man of quiet wisdom will be missed, yet he is so woven into the fabric of our lives that his impact will live on for generations to come. We his family are grateful to our great God for lending him to us for his brief but profound existence here on earth, and we too are following his example that we may see him again in our eternal reward. We love you James Gordon Coble!
