Jerry Avery Jr was born on August 23, 1949, in East Chicago, IN to the union of Jerry Sr. and Ruby Avery.
Jerry was the eldest of eight children. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother – Michael Donnell Avery, two sisters – Arlicia Avery and Janet L. Acoff, one son - Michael Hill, and one daughter – Dona’ Avery.
Jerry was 75 years old when he was called home to be with the Lord on October 27, 2024, at Kansas City Hospice House and Palliative Care. Jerry gave his life to Christ at an early age and attended Haven of Rest Missionary Baptist Church, in Chicago, IN. As a young adult he joined Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend David L. Gray, Sr.
As a teenager Jerry lived in East Chicago, IN and Hammond, IN before moving to the south side of Chicago, IL where he and his family lived. He graduated in 1967 from Chicago Vocational High School. After high school Jerry joined the military where he served in the United States Navy for 2 years before receiving an honorable medical discharge. After the navy he enrolled at the Commercial Trade Institute where he received his certification as an electrician. He also obtained two associate degrees, one from Donnelly College in General Studies and the other in Data Entry Programming from Kansas City Business College.
Jerry wore many hats and had multiple career positions including chef, over the road truck driver, and other transportation positions throughout his career. He also worked for the US Postal Services, Santa Fe Railroad, US Census Bureau, Election Poll Worker Supervisor, Maintenance Supervisor, worked as an Electrician and became a supervisor in this role. In his later years Jerry worked for Secure transporting dialysis patients to medical appointments, which he loved. In addition, he worked during the school year as a foster grandparent at several elementary schools in the Kansas City Missouri area until his health failed. Jerry was a jack of all trades and a hard worker and could never sit still he had to always be doing something.
On May 21, 1971, Jerry was united in matrimony to Bennie Lunn and to this union was two fabulous, beautiful, phenomenal daughters Tyree and Trinette.
Jerry leaves to cherish his memory his wife Bennie, two daughters, Tyree (Dewayne) Warren – K.C. MO, Trinette (Russell) Henley – St. Louis, MO, 4 granddaughters Teneia Carriger – St. Jospeh, MO, Tyia (DeAndre) Harris – Prairie Village, KS, Tiara Weber – Houston, TX, Marissa Warren – Merriam, KS, two great grandchildren Laniya Carriger – St. Joseph, MO and Tyson Lee Harris – Prairie Village, KS, 3 sisters – Rennea Avery Graham, Douglasville, GA, Robbie Avery – Chicago, IL, Rogene (Lenard)Avery-Shears – Greenville, SC and one brother Mervin Tracy Avery (Laura) – Roxbury, MA, his brother and sister-in-love, David Lunn Sr. (KCK), and Betty Richard (Aurora, CO), a host of other nieces, nephews, relative and friends.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday November 8, 2024, visitation will be from 9 A.M. - 10 A.M. with services beginning at 10 A.M. at Pleasant Green Baptist Church 340 David L. Gray Dr. In Kansas City, Kansas 66101.
Interment wiil be held on Saturday November 9, 2024 at 11 A.M. at Leavenworth National Cemetery in Leavenworth, Kansas
