Shirley peacefully passed away on June 8, 2023. She was born on May 24, 1935, in Hiawatha, Kansas, to M. Odessa (Montgomery) Bowman and Charles W. Bowman Jr. After completing her high school education in Hiawatha in 1953, she attended Highland Junior College in Highland, Kansas. Soon after, she relocated to Kansas City, Missouri, where she embarked on her professional journey as a secretary at Niles Home for Children. Later, she joined the City of KCMO and dedicated 34 years of service in the Treasury Division until her retirement. Even in her retirement, Shirley continued working part-time for 10 years at the Jackson County Collector’s Office.
On April 24, 1955, Shirley married Charles Bogguess, and from this union came three children: Michael Bogguess, Steven Bogguess, and Kim Bogguess-Fields. Although the marriage later dissolved, Shirley remained devoted to her family and Charles’s. She was a faithful member of Palestine Missionary Baptist Church of Jesus Christ from 1978 until her passing, attending early morning services alongside her daughter Kim. Shirley found joy in spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, indulging in cooking, and solving crossword puzzles. Her affectionate nickname became “Grandma,” a testament to the love and warmth she bestowed upon all who knew her.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, both sons, Michael and Steven; sister, E. Genevieve Jones; brother, granddaughter, Shaneas Fields, and a great-great-grand-daughter, Kenslee Bogguess.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Kim Bogguess-Fields (Steve Fields); sister, Charlotte Dennis; nine grandchildren, Jesse Larkie, Michael Pulluaim, Eric Bogguess, Murray Woodard II (Dr. Cokethea Hill), Dwayne Stone, Michaela Jordan (David), Stacia Fields, Quincey Shobe, and Leah Larkie; numerous great-grand-children, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Shirley’s warm presence, unwavering faith, and cherished memories will forever remain in the hearts of her loved ones.
