Walter Albert Pugsley of Kansas City, Missouri, passed peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus on February 12, 2025, surrounded by his wife and sons. Walt was born on January 27, 1938, and grew up in Zillah, Washington. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Herbert and Stella (Eckmann) Pugsley. He is survived by his devoted wife Shirley of nearly 65 years, his sons, Scott (Debie) and Ken (Sindie) Pugsley, along with his treasured grandchildren Jenna (Chelsea), Matt (Jill), Lara (Zach), Lena and Katie, great-grandson Greyson, his sisters Marie and Marge, and numerous nieces, nephews and other loving family members.
Walt began his career as a math and science teacher before transitioning to the emerging field of computer science in the mid-1960s. He then worked at Boeing in Seattle and McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis before moving his family to Kansas City, where he enjoyed a long career with Hallmark Cards. The family settled in a home on Lake Waukomis, where they lived for 45 years and which became a cherished gathering place for family and friends, filled with laughter, parties and many July 4th and New Year celebrations.
Walt enjoyed sports and musicals, and especially loved boating and spending time on the water at Lake Waukomis. A lover of history, he delighted in studying and discussing historical events. Walt also loved traveling, especially trips back to the Pacific Northwest. Above all, he treasured the time he spent with his family.
Walt leaves behind a legacy of a close-knit family and many friends who will remember him for his listening ear, calm demeanor, and wise advice. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
A celebration of Walt's life will be held on Saturday, March 1 at The Church of the Redeemer, 7110 N State Route 9, Kansas City, MO 64152. Visitation will be at 1:00 p.m., with the celebration of life at 2:00 and reception following. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Walt’s memory to The Church of the Redeemer.
Rest in peace, dear Walt. Your love and kindness will forever remain in our hearts.
